New Year. New Blog. New Year’s Eve in San Antonio.

We were lucky to spend time during the holidays with our families back in SoCal, but Richard had to be back at work on the 27th of December.  We were at a loss of what to do for New Year’s.  The majority of our Houston friends were out of town visiting families or heading downtown for the night, but after some Googling, we found out about the biggest party in Texas on NYE: Celebrate San Antonio, only a 2.5 hr drive away.

A few mouse clicks and a hotel booked later, we left immediately after Richard’s shift on New Year’s Eve at 2pm.  The drive to San Antonio was fairly breezy and traffic was surprisingly not existent.  We got a great deal at the Marriott on the Riverwalk so we didn’t need to take our car the rest of the night.  It was our first time to San Antonio and it is advertised as one of the most romantic cities in the States with its beautiful river walk.  The river walk is even more of a delight with lights stringing from trees along the river during the holidays. To top it all off, with over 250,000 fellow “celebrators”, the streets of downtown San Antonio and HemisFair Park were filled with music, lights, carnival food and games.

Richard said he wanted to take an "artsy picture". How did he do?

Midnight!!! An amazing firework show immediately followed after.

After the light show, we headed back to our hotel where the lobby was apparently the place to be at. We had some more drinks, danced a bit, and headed up to order some room service! Room service might not seem like a big deal, but it was the first time we’ve ever ordered room service together (with the exception of a cruise, where room service is already paid for). This was our first splurge for 2012!

The next morning, it took over an hour to get our call out of valet so we chilled at Starbucks in the lobby. Note to selves for future travels: never, ever do valet again during a holiday.
